Sports in Primary

“It is exercise alone that supports the spirits, and keeps the mind in vigour.” Marcus Tullius Cicero (30 AD)

“A healthy mind in a healthy body.” Juvenal (55 AD - 127 AD)

The Green Oasis School Physical Education program is an integral part of the total educational process. The program provides a framework in which the student can develop physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally. Through Physical Education experiences students have the opportunity to gain knowledge, enhance physical health and fitness, and to acquire skills which promote a healthy lifestyle.

As you can see from the year long plans, the students in Key Stage 1 and 2 will be participating in a broad and balanced curriculum. Each lesson contains key components that develop knowledge and understanding of health and fitness; acquiring and developing skills; and evaluating and improving performance.

Key stage 1 (yr1 – yr3)

In the first semester, the students will participate in games that focus on developing special awareness, team work, cooperation, and an understanding of safety. By learning to follow rules and to be honest during the games the students develop morally, spiritually and socially. Gradually, the focus of the lessons turns to developing foundation skills which will be a basis for their lessons in Key Stage 2.

Key stage 2 (Yr4 –Yr 6)

During Key Stage 2 the students will be focusing on specific sports skills, such as basketball, Athletics and soft ball. As well as consolidating and improving upon learning Key Stage 1, the students will select and apply their skills and understanding into competitive situations.SwimmingDuring the summer months, all students will be participating in a comprehensive swimming programme.

It is vitally important that students fully participate in swimming as, not only is it an integral part of the PE programme, swimming is an essential lifesaving skill which should be mastered by all.
