Green Oasis is a bilingual school in an international setting and activities so far this month have been truly international.
On Monday, November 14th we were visited by a group of Science experts from Taiwan. They gave a wonderful Science show to our Keystage 2 Primary students. The children sat in awe as they watched rockets being launched and the stage swamped in eerie clouds of carbon dioxide. It was a fun and exciting day for them all. Our thanks go to the Taiwan Traders association for organizing the show.
Just two days later we were visited by Artspot, a group of touring actors from Argentina and they put on a magical performance of Cyrano de Bergerac. They graciously gave two performances, one for Keystage 2 in Primary and the other for Keystage 3 from Secondary. Those of us who were lucky enough to watch both performances noticed the clever changes they made for the two different types of audience. Just four actors, a magical set and some expert lighting transformed our auditorium into a real theatre. Students of all ages sat transfixed by the play and in the words of one year 4 student “It was incredible!” We have invited the group back next year to perform another wonderful play for the whole school.
Earlier this semester a group of 4 students who are studying Global Perspectives for IGCSE decided to raise some money for a charitable cause as part of their coursework. They had the task of identifying a need, finding a source of required materials and raising enough money to buy these materials. They identified a school in Futian for the children of migrant workers. They visited the school and identified a need for a properly equipped computer lab. They found out where they could purchase a number of second hand computers and they raised the money to pay for all of them. The money was mostly raised during the Halloween festivities. I wish to congratulate the four students: Charlie Zhang, Justin Yu, Brandon Yang and Luke Liu on the way in which they carried out the whole process. I hope that in future we will have a project every year to help the same school in some way. I also look forward to seeing students from Green Oasis visiting the school and helping out with some teaching.
Earlier this week a large number of Green Oasis students took part in the opening ceremony of the Futian District Games. Thanks go to the PE staff and particularly to Miss Ava Zhang who prepared the students for the opening march. Congratulations to all the students who represented the school.
33 secondary students and 4 staff will be visiting Malaysia in December for a residential camp. They will be taking part in a number of Aerospace activities as well as visiting Melaka which was the first Chinese settlement in Malaysia. As soon as visas have been issued and we are ready to give back passports to students there will be a meeting for parents to learn more of the details of the trip.
Finally a word about safety: Elsewhere on the website there are details of the new arrangements for parents visiting the school. We now have a reception desk and all visitors are required to sign in and wear an ID badge. Any visitors found on the premises without a badge will be asked to leave. Please cooperate with us to make Green Oasis a secure environment for your children.
