Head Boy and Head Girl Elections at Green Oasis School
In the last couple of weeks 8 of our Year 10 students have been campaigning for the prestigious position of Head Boy and Head Girl at Green Oasis School. Peter Kang, Peter Li and Alex Rybak were running for Head Boy with Candy Chen, Kelly Feng, Ravleen Kaur, Crystal Fong and Lina Soliman running for Head Girl. The number of applicants is unprecedented at Green Oasis and shows how much this role has grown at the school.
The process began with each candidate sending an application letter to Mr Robinson (Head of Secondary) outlining why they believed they were suited to be being Head Boy or Head Girl. The application letters were put up on the Student Council noticeboard so all students could read them. From this point too students were able to put up posters around the school, and also utilize social media in order to gain support and connect with the students/voters. The candidates were under strict instructions to focus on their campaigns only and not criticize other candidates.
As the Primary and Secondary school continue work together more closely Ms Anne (Head of Primary) invited the candidates to make speeches during Primary assembly so that the Primary students could also vote. We hope that these candidates are seen as positive role models for the younger children and will hopefully inspire them to think about this position in the years to come. Speaking to Primary children is very different to presenting to Secondary, as the language used needs to be simplified. Our 8 candidates rose to the occasion and the audience were a credit to the Primary school as they listened intently. After the presentations the Primary children voted for their preferred candidates.
Then it came to Friday afternoon, the final presentation to the Secondary students. The candidates were given period 5 to prepare, rehearse and practice. Before they presented the outgoing Head Boy/Head Girl and Deputy Head Boy (Peter Li/Candy Deng and Chester Xu) gave a speech to the students reflecting on their experience of the role. The reception they received from the students was rapturous and showed genuine appreciation for what they had down during the past year. They were also given their ‘Letters of Commendation’ which can be used in University applications in the future.
Then it was time for the 8 candidates to present their case. The secondary students listened intently and as more speeches were made realized that they may well have a very difficult decision to make. The students were given the weekend to reflect and were to vote on the morning of Tuesday 7th March.
All results were then collected and announced to the 8 candidates over pizza on Wednesday 8th March. We are delighted to announce that the Head Boy at Green Oasis School for 2017 is Peter Li, and the Head Girl for Green Oasis School for 2017 after a very close vote is Kelly Feng .
However it is important to congratulate all of the very worthy candidates, who all supported each other through the difficult and challenging process. Getting up and speaking in front of peers is not easy. Not only were all candidates a credit to Green Oasis School and their families but they are an absolute credit to themselves and for that they should be very proud of how they have performed during this process. It also goes to show the depth of talent and leadership potential we have at Green Oasis School.
Looking to lead, learning to look- congratulations to all involved!
