English as an Additioanl Language (EAL)

English as an Additional Language

As GOS is a culturally diverse school where for many of the students English is not their first language, we recognise that  some students may need support if they are to communicate effectively in English with each other and also the faculty.  As such we have formed a department dedicated to offering this support on an ongoing basis.

The English as an Additional Language (EAL) department supports students so that they can develop their learning skills in order to maximise their access to the curriculum and in turn their academic success.  We do this by arranging a variety of support programmes to cater for the needs of each student.  These programmes are designed to improve the student’s learning capacities and also bridge any linguistic challenges they are facing in order to help them in achieving their goals.  Our aim is to develop the necessary academic and social language skills to enable students to access the curriculum independently and to allow students to benefit fully from the GOS experience.  EAL support starts at year 1 and continues right through to year 11.  Selected students within the secondary school will be provided with after school EAL support to maximise the potential for learning and to offer an EAL specific environment in which to improve their communication skills across the four core skill areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

As a means of providing this support we are fortunate to have a qualified and experienced EAL team in place which works closely with class teachers to allow for transparency across the teaching team.  Any child benefiting from EAL support will work towards improving their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and are monitored on an ongoing basis to assess their progress.
