Head of Secondary's Greeting
It is wonderful to have a new year underway as we celebrate not only the Mid-Autumn Festival, but also the returning of our students from their summer break. We are really pleased with the way things have gone during these first couple of weeks here in the Secondary, and would like to share with you some of the procedures that you will need to be aware of in order to fully support your child’s efforts toward learning this year.

The Tracking Sheet
As was the case last year, the Tracking Sheet is providing teachers with a forum on which to communicate with you concerning your child’s progress both academically and pastorally. SMS messages, phone calls, and emails will be used by the Student Affairs Office to contact you and inform you concern this progress. The Student Affairs Office is made up of two new Green Oasis teachers: Meng Xue and Frank Lin. You should contact these teachers at 8395 9000 ext. 331, with any questions or concerns that you have about your child. They can also be reached via email at

This year the Tracking Sheet also allows for detailed recording of student punctuality and attendance during class times. We ask that you pay attention to the number of absences your child has this year, as we know that even a few absences throughout the year can negatively affect student performance. With this in mind, if a student’s punctuality or attendance to any subject’s lessons drops below 85%, the school may withhold the student’s interim or semester reports until a parent conference is held and a solution to the problem is agreed upon and implemented. This policy refers to all absences, whether or not parent permission or approval accompanies the absences and punctuality. We will of course consider all cases individually, while doing our best at the same time to uphold the policy. This will be done in an effort to improve not only the academic performance of the students, but also to improve their overall character, habits and attitudes toward their education.
The Parent Support Group
The Parent Support Group (PSG) will be active this year, as parent representatives from each form class collaborate with the Head of Secondary and communicate with other parents concerning events and developments at the school.
The LMS
In an effort to increase your access to information about your child’s academic progress, we have more fully implemented the use of the Learning Management System (LMS) this year here at GOS. Not only do teachers provide their weekly lesson plans and term plans for you to see, but student academic performance is updated by teachers on a regular basis leading up to our interim and end of semester reports. This means that you are now able to check your child’s individual LMS subject class pages for additional and private teacher updates concerning student academic progress before the scheduled report days. Privacy is ensured, as this information is only posted in a manner that is accessible to individual students and parents. Please utilize this valuable resource by checking often for teacher updates. In order to access this information concerning your child, you will need to know your child’s LMS username and password.
The Prefects, PSHE, and the House System
Both PSHE and the utilization of the House System have been improved upon this year by the addition of the student Prefects. We have implemented a new program that provides opportunities for leadership for certain year 10 and 11 students, and an opportunity for the Secondary Section to increase its level of student democracy by providing these students with a greater voice in school matters.
Certain students from year 11 who have exhibited excellence in leadership, behaviour, and effort have been chosen as Prefects. These Prefects have been provided an added measure of responsibility, as they are expected to set examples in behaviour, effort, and attitude for other students. They have also been provided with opportunities to be involved in the more creative aspects of the secondary section. These opportunities include the following:
- Creative input and maintenance of the House System in the Secondary Section;
- Input and assistance in the tailoring and implementation of the Secondary Section’s Personal, Social, and Health Education system (PSHE)—including opportunities for stage performance and teaching;
- Instruction to other students concerning excellence in academics and behaviour.
We will ensure that these prefect duties will not hinder the students’ studies. In fact, the year 11 prefects will retain these positions until Chinese New Year, at which point they will cede these prefect appointments to the next group of prefects—those chosen from year 10. These year 10 students will maintain these positions until the following Chinese New Year, when a similar transition will be conducted. This is to ensure that as the IGCSE exam times approach, the year 11 students will not be burdened by prefect duties, and can focus wholly on their studies. We look forward to seeing these students thrive as they take on new creative responsibilities, and we have the utmost confidence in their success.
Thank you for all of your help and concern with our students. We have amazing parents here at GOS. We value your input and we look forward to using your expertise and knowledge this year as we continue to improve the school and to make our students’ educational experience as outstanding as possible.
Best regards,
Lane Lambert
